Teaching Experience: Poudre High School

Semester: Fall 2020

Mentors: Wendi Miller & Shannon Evans

Practicum Instructor: Dawn Mallette

During my third phase of my education program, I was placed in Wendi Miller and Shannon Evan's Reading and Writing class. During this time, I was able to experience what it was like to teach during a pandemic, and how teachers are trying to reach their students to the best of their capabilities. In this class, my students were here because they are trying to regain english credits or because they are needing extra reading and writing help. Therefore, students are taken back to the basics and refreshing their skills to become

even stronger readers and writers. While observing the new teaching styles being used in remote and hybrid learning, I was also able to teach these students during a trying time in education. Something that I am still in awe about is watching Shannon and Wendi work so well together with their co-teaching strategies. They are both actively working to help with student needs as teachers in and out of the classroom. Beyond their class room, PHS is actively working hard to create a fun and safe environment for students so that they can continue hybrid learning for as long as possible. Many of the teachers there are passionate about their students and their classrooms, and it shows deeply within the school's culture.

Through this program, I was also able to develop one on one connections with students through the AVID program provided by PSD. In this program I'm not only assisting students with their academic responsibilities, but also mentoring them and helping them make the best decisions once they start considering higher education. I believe that this semester has helped prepare me for my student teaching, and the unknowns that I will face as we continue teaching in the world of COVID-19.
