When I came to the school three years ago, we set out with a goal to decide what we could be the best in the world at, and bringing technology into the hands of our students was one of those areas, but we found an even larger, more encompassing goal and that was to train student leaders to make a difference in our community. In this article, we are able to see how incorporating technology in the classroom helps create a student community in the classroom. I think the most important piece of this whole thing though is that they are creating the work that they can be proud of. I think making students constantly write essays, study for tests, or just constantly memorize vocabulary words strips the love of learning out of them. Giving them some type of control not only shows respect, but it also lets them engage in things their passionate about. The staff also worked very hard to change the culture of the school into a more positive atmosphere. Teachers learned how to build relationships with students, and students learned how to be successful in more ways beyond academics. Why we can’t be able to affect every student’s life, we have to try our very best, and at least give them the tools to succeed. With the progress this school made, student fights between minorities dropped greatly, especially with all of the improvements they made with the school. Sometimes you also have to improve the atmosphere physically beyond it being mentally and emotionally. I do think that’s why teachers decorate their classrooms, and it’s why students learn better in those classrooms.
While they are still learning and getting some of the bumps smoothed out, I think it’s great progress they’re making to better the education of both students and teachers. Just because you’re a teacher doesn’t mean that you just stop learning, if anything you’re probably learning more than your students at that point in time.
