Poem Untitled

Draft 1:

Children sit in rows of 6×7 perfectly straight and parallel surrounded by white walls and grey carpet.

Individualism isn’t allowed. Creativity is banned.

Pencils up. Write. Pencils Down. Finished.

Pages of notes scattered across teenage rooms lit by lamps

Blurring together in incomplete sentences and uncertainty.

3 tests tomorrow. Two essays Friday. Morning Practice. Afternoon Practice. Family time. Why don’t you have enough time? I don’t assign you that much homework

Draft 2:

Children sit in rows of 6×7; perfectly straight and parallel surrounded by white walls and grey carpet.

Individuality is left at the front door rotting in the garbage amongst McDonalds wrappers and Taco Bell boxes.

Creativity is banned like the books in Fahrenheit 451. Funny how we teach our students knowledge is power but they’re only allowed to learn one way. Taught one specific path that will make them happy.

Graduate high school. Go to college. Drown in debt. Create a family. Teach your children the cycle. Suffer in age as the country doesn’t give back to the people when the people give so much to it.
