What Kind of Ally am I?

©2010-2019 pekexx

Fun fact of the day; apparently there are two different versions of this article; the full version and the one Cindy actually wanted us to read for this badge. It wouldn’t let me access it, so thinking I’m smart, I just look up the one on online and read sixteen pages of the extended version of the one I should have read. It’s fine though, completely fine. I’m not dying inside or anything. Everything is just fine.

This article was something interesting to read, because I do agree that there are different types of allies in our society. The first one threw me a little though, even though I did understand the implications they actually had for this type of ally. I’m glad they did reinstate that the person wasn’t bad for what they were doing, but just needed to be made to understand that what they are doing isn’t helping everyone. Though, I wouldn’t necessarily call it selfish because most people do protect their friends, regardless of anything. While I don’t think it’s okay that they only do it when the person is present, I do think that it’s not necessarily a bad thing to protect the person they care about.

I would say I would be a level two or three ally, though I don’t actually put anything into action. I do try to be careful of how things are said so they don’t come off as racist, sexist etc, and I also think everyone deserves equal opportunity. No one should be made to feel less than the other person next to them because of something they can’t change about themselves. I’m also proud to be white, but I’m also understanding of the privileges I have as well as know that there are many people who can’t be in my “status quo” either, which is wrong.

I think this article just shows you can always improve yourself on being an ally if you want to. It can take a while, and you may have to battle through some of your own feelings, but it is possible. I’m also glad that it didn’t make all white people seem bad, but just not fully understanding that their actions can actually produce more harm than good. Sometimes everyone needs a reminder on that, because they do have good intentions but how they are produced comes out wrong.
