I think for me I really want to make an impact with as many students as I can. I want them to remember that I have been there for them, and that they could come to me for anything and I would try my very best to be there for them. I think sometimes as teachers we forget what it’s like to be a student, and maybe when we’re first starting out we remember, but once we have a few years under our belt we just slowly start to forget. I want to be able to say good morning to all of my students and connect with them. I want to be there for their failures and their successes (of any kind). I want them to be able to show their individuality and find themselves in my classroom. I know I can’t affect every student. Some will push and pull away from any type of hand I extend out to them, but for them to at least know it’s there, then I think that’s enough.
Sometimes you have to remember as a teacher we can’t do everything. We can only provide the tools for the students to be who they wish to be, but we can’t make them use them. We can only hope for the best, and we will have many students reach for the stars, but there are going to be many more that think it’s pointless. I want to be the teacher that can change that type of thinking. I want to be the one adult that believes in them, even if they can’t believe in themselves.
For colleagues, I never really thought about it because there isn’t much to think about I didn’t think. But I want to work with them and make our building a safer, community-based setting so all students can get the best type of learning possible. All teachers, or at least most, thrive on student success, so why not do it all together?
We need to be a voice for students, for our education. We need to show them they care. Many of us becoming the next generation of teachers remember as students when we felt like our teachers didn’t notice anything; why repeat the cycle? Growth is the most important thing in the classroom, and it doesn’t have to come just from the students.
